Story behind the artwork
The Design A client once came to me with a very specific vision for a hidden corner of her garden. She wanted vertical steel plates, rising like shards from a central base, each tapering to a sharp point. She insisted on varying heights—a rhythmic, uneven line that refused to be boring. In my mind, as I forged them, they began to look like a gathering of individuals. I named the piece "All My Ladies," because they reminded me of my friends—each one unique, standing tall, and holding her own space.
The Artist’s Regret When I look back at this project from many years ago, I feel a slight pang of regret. At the time, I was focused on the how—the technical challenge of the base and the taper of the steel. I didn't stop to ask the why.
What did those rising shards mean to her? Was it a celebration of strength? A memorial? Or simply a shape that caught her eye?
The Shift in Perspective I’ve realized since then that an artwork is a bridge. Sometimes a piece is "just" a decoration to the artist, but it becomes a profound symbol to the customer. Other times, the artist pours their entire soul into a meaning that the buyer never sees. And then there are those rare, spontaneous moments where something is created without a plan, yet it touches a stranger so deeply it changes them.
A New Vow Moving forward, I’ve made a vow. I won't just ask my clients what they want to see; I will ask them what they want to feel. Every hammer blow is stronger when it’s backed by a story. "All My Ladies" stands in that garden as a silent reminder to me: the steel is only half of the work—the story is the rest.
