Story behind the artwork

Sometimes, the most personal commissions come from those closest to us. This sculpture was created at the request of my partner, who wanted an angel to bring good fortune and protection to our home.

In this piece, I returned to the combination of iron and brass—a pairing I find endlessly rewarding. I particularly enjoy working with brass sheet for the wings, as it allows me to use the "oil and fire" technique. By burning oil onto the heated metal, I can create a rich, organic surface finish that gives the wings an ancient, weathered appearance.

Since its creation, this work has sparked interesting conversation—and even some critique—regarding the angular, square shape of the angel’s head. This was a very deliberate choice. I was inspired by the silhouettes of ancient Egyptian pharaohs, whose regal headdresses created a distinct, squared shadow. I wanted to borrow that sense of power, weight, and ancient sovereignty, moving away from the soft, rounded features typical of traditional angelic art.

This piece is a testament to the fact that even a symbol of "luck" can have a sharp, historical edge.

The stories behind my artwork, the opportunities in The Lighthouse, and the reflections of the Morning Muse are my ways of keeping the lamp lit for our creative community. These resources will always be free to access. If they have found you at the right time, consider fueling the forge to help keep the fire burning. Your support, in any amount, is deeply appreciated.
