Story behind the artwork

The Brief: Beyond the Pedestal "I often wonder if these pieces should be classified as 'art' or 'utility.' But perhaps, once you hear the story, the distinction disappears. A long-time client—the same one who commissioned Wind and Seeds—came to me with a request: she needed stands for bird sculptures in her garden. Her only condition was that they couldn't be 'boring.' She didn't want the birds to simply sit on top of a pole; she wanted something original."

The Vision: Capturing the Vortex "I started thinking about the physics of a bird leaving the ground. In that split second of takeoff, there is a sudden eruption of energy. The wings beat, the air swirls, and a small vortex of dust and leaves is whipped up from the earth. I wanted to forge that invisible moment."

The Craft: Forging the Whirlwind "I moved away from solid, heavy structures and chose thin steel rods instead. I heated and bent them into chaotic, flowing curves that spiral upward. The goal was to create the illusion that the birds aren't just 'placed' there—they are being lifted by the very air they've just disturbed. The steel represents the swirl of dust and the rush of wind left in their wake."

The Result: Static Motion "I think I succeeded. When you look at the installation, the birds seem to have just leaped into the sky. The 'stands' have become part of the movement itself. It reminds me that even the most functional object can tell a story if you focus not on the object, but on the energy around it."

The stories behind my artwork, the opportunities in The Lighthouse, and the reflections of the Morning Muse are my ways of keeping the lamp lit for our creative community. These resources will always be free to access. If they have found you at the right time, consider fueling the forge to help keep the fire burning. Your support, in any amount, is deeply appreciated.
