Story behind the artwork

After the success of Seven Sisters, which was largely a technical experiment, I felt ready to push the medium further. I wanted to see if this "oil and fire" technique could carry a deeper emotional concept.

The inspiration for this work comes from the quiet beauty of everyday life. There are moments when a simple, ordinary activity—like walking in the rain—suddenly feels extraordinary. When the clouds open and you raise an umbrella, offering your shoulder to the person beside you, the world changes. The rain drumming on the surface of the umbrella creates a kind of "armor" or a shell, shielding you from the rest of the world.

In that space under the umbrella, only two people exist. You can talk about anything or nothing at all; the noise of the outside world is muted by the rhythm of the water. It is a moment of pure, undisturbed intimacy.

Technique and Texture: I followed the same process as I did with Seven Sisters, forging the figures as a separate relief before mounting them to the iron plate. However, I challenged myself with the background finish. Instead of grinding the plate back to a shine after the fire, I used the carbonized oil itself to create the texture. I manipulated the flames and the oil to mimic the vertical streaks of a downpour, creating the visual "rain" that surrounds the couple.

This piece was the first time I realized that my metalwork could capture not just a shape, but an atmosphere.

The stories behind my artwork, the opportunities in The Lighthouse, and the reflections of the Morning Muse are my ways of keeping the lamp lit for our creative community. These resources will always be free to access. If they have found you at the right time, consider fueling the forge to help keep the fire burning. Your support, in any amount, is deeply appreciated.
