Story behind the artwork

In much of my work, I use the "oil and fire" technique, but Dreaming is a rare example of a piece that emerged from the heat perfectly finished. With this method, it is often incredibly difficult to control the final effect; the fire has a mind of its own. When I pulled this stainless steel sheet from the flames and let it cool, I realized immediately that it required no further touch from my tools. The fire had already told the story.

The patterns and textures that emerged gave me a very specific feeling: the sensation of uncontrolled dreaming.

I don't mean the kind of dreaming where we consciously plan our future or visualize our goals. I mean the vivid, "living" dreams we experience during deep sleep or profound meditation—the kind of dreams where we find ourselves in a vast, unknown space that we cannot control. In these moments, we aren't the creators; we are travelers. We experience real emotions, sights, and sounds in a world that exists entirely without our effort.

I have always loved that feeling of "swimming" through a dream, simply tasting the experience as it happens. This sculpture is a physical fragment of that world. Because I didn't manipulate the surface after the fire was done, the piece retains that raw, accidental beauty of a dream that you wake up from, wishing you could stay just a little longer.
