The Lighthouse Guide
How to Request a Brief
''To move from "Inquirer" to "Shortlisted Artist.''
Is this project for you? (The Level Check) Before you send that email, look at the "Weight" of the project. A good rule of thumb is the "Step-Up" Rule:
The Jump: You should ideally have completed at least one project at roughly 50-70% of the current budget. If you’ve handled a £5k gate commission, you are ready to pitch for a £10k trail marker.
The Portfolio Match: If the brief asks for "Marine Grade Durability," make sure you have examples of your finishes (galvanizing, marine paint, or stainless work) ready to show.
The Complexity: High-budget commissions often require Public Liability Insurance (PLI)—usually £5m or £10m—and a Risk Assessment. If you aren't ready to provide these, use the smaller £2k-£5k "Lighthouse" leads to build your experience first.
1. The Professional Inquiry (The Email)
When a link is broken and you have to email a Project Lead, your first impression is the email itself. Don't just ask for the file; introduce your craft.
Subject Line: Keep it clear. “Inquiry: [Project Name] – Request for Artist Brief”
The Hook: Mention where you saw it. “I am a professional [Blacksmith/Sculptor/Maker] and I am interested in the commission for...”
The Request: “I understand the project portal is currently undergoing updates. Could you please send the PDF Artist Brief and any relevant site specifications directly to this email?”
The Signature: Always include a link to your portfolio or Instagram. This shows them immediately that you are a serious contender.
2. What to do once you get the PDF
Once the brief hits your inbox, don't just skim it. Look for the "Golden Three":
Selection Criteria: What do they value most? (e.g., Is it "Community Engagement" or "Material Durability"?)
Budget Breakdown: Does the £15k include VAT? Does it include the foundation/installation?
The Site Context: If it's a "Heritage" site, they want to hear how your steelwork respects the history.
3. The Lighthouse Rule of Etiquette
Be Patient: Give them 48 hours to reply before following up.
Be Prepared: Have your Public Liability Insurance (PLI) and a basic CV ready to go.
Mention the Source: Feel free to mention you found the lead via The Lighthouse. It helps them realize that their "hidden" project is being seen by the right talent.
The stories behind my artwork, the opportunities in The Lighthouse, and the reflections of the Morning Muse are my ways of keeping the lamp lit for our creative community. These resources will always be free to access. If they have found you at the right time, consider fueling the forge to help keep the fire burning. Your support, in any amount, is deeply appreciated.
