Story behind the artwork

In Spring marks a significant turning point in my creative journey. It was created after a long pause, a period of stillness that eventually gave way to a new energy and a signature style I am now dedicated to refining.

In this piece, I moved away from traditional iron and began working with stainless steel. The transition was a challenge; stainless steel behaves differently under the heat of the forge, requiring a new level of precision. I chose this material for its permanence—it resists the rust of time, ensuring that the vibrant "bloom" of the artwork remains untarnished for the future.

The inspiration for this work came from the shifting of the seasons. I remember my daughter asking me which season was my favorite. As I began to explain to her what I loved about the waking life of Spring, the heat of Summer, the colors of Autumn, and the silence of Winter, I realized that I don't have a favorite. I love them all because each brings a completely different soul to the world.

The Process: A State of Flow When I created In Spring, I worked without a rigid plan. I allowed my emotions to dictate the layers. The process began with the "oil and fire" technique, burning the first layer into the steel to create a deep, primal texture. I then followed with multiple layers of oil-based colors, building a rich, painterly depth directly onto the metal.

For me, this method of creation is a profound form of meditation. When I am layering these colors onto the stainless steel, the rest of the world ceases to exist. There is no noise, no stress—just me and the "canvas." It is a moment of pure, creative presence.
