Story behind the artwork
Every master was once a student, and Needle was born from a moment of pure practice. I was in the workshop, pushing myself to master one of the most difficult traditional blacksmithing techniques: fire welding. This is the ancient art of heating two separate pieces of iron until they are white-hot and then striking them with a hammer to fuse them into a single, seamless whole on the anvil.
The Accidental Vision: I took a steel rod, bent it in the middle, and began welding the ends together. As I worked the metal from the tips back toward the bend, I intentionally left a small section unjoined at the loop. Looking down, I realized I hadn't just completed a technical exercise—I had forged a massive, industrial needle.
It felt too elegant to simply throw back into the scrap pile. I decided to follow the intuition of the "Morning Muse." I forged a thin, delicate strip of steel and threaded it through the eye of the needle, mimicking a piece of thread caught in mid-motion. To give it stability, I anchored the point into a natural stone base.
The First Step: This piece holds a special place in my history because it was the first time someone recognized my work not just as a product of a trade, but as art.
A client saw it in my workshop and was immediately struck by it. He bought it as a Christmas gift for his accountant—a woman who loved to embroider—as a tribute to her years of dedicated service. It was a humble beginning, but it was the first proof I had that my "exercises" could carry deep personal meaning for someone else.
The stories behind my artwork, the opportunities in The Lighthouse, and the reflections of the Morning Muse are my ways of keeping the lamp lit for our creative community. These resources will always be free to access. If they have found you at the right time, consider fueling the forge to help keep the fire burning. Your support, in any amount, is deeply appreciated.
