Story behind the artwork
This piece was born during a weekend of new beginnings. In 2010, I had just moved into a new workshop, and to celebrate the space being functional, I held an "Open Day." I invited the public to come in, smell the coal smoke, and watch the iron glow as I worked at the anvil.
Pictures of Flowers began as a live demonstration. I wanted to show the visitors how raw iron could be coaxed into delicate, organic shapes. At the time, I didn't view it as a major "artwork"—to me, it was simply a display of my craft, a way to share the secrets of the forge with my neighbors. When the weekend ended, I took the piece home and hung it on my wall as a simple decoration.
The Eye of the Beholder: Sometime later, a good friend was helping me move house. He had been a great support to me over the years, often assisting with the heavy installations of my commercial gates and railings. When he saw the flower study hanging on the wall, he stopped in his tracks. He told me how much he loved it and how he wished he could have something like that for his own home.
In that moment, I realized something important: an artist is often the harshest critic of their own work. I had seen it as a "demonstration piece," but he saw a beautiful, permanent bloom captured in metal. I took it off the wall and gave it to him then and there as a thank-you for his help.
Knowing that this piece still hangs on his wall today and brings him joy is a powerful reminder for me. It confirmed my theory that art doesn't have to be "important" or "complex" to be successful. If a work touches even one person’s heart, it has fulfilled its purpose.
The stories behind my artwork, the opportunities in The Lighthouse, and the reflections of the Morning Muse are my ways of keeping the lamp lit for our creative community. These resources will always be free to access. If they have found you at the right time, consider fueling the forge to help keep the fire burning. Your support, in any amount, is deeply appreciated.
