Story behind the artwork
The Resurrection of a Vision "Twenty-five years ago, artist Amanda Lebus created a series of public art installations in London. Back then, they were crafted from MDF board—a material that served its purpose for a time but eventually succumbed to the relentless British weather. Recently, Amanda reached out to me with a profound mission: to breathe new life into these pieces and recreate them in steel so they could stand for generations."
The Technical Challenge: A Perfect Fit "This collaboration was both simple and incredibly complex. The pieces had to be exact replicas of the originals to fit perfectly back into their existing urban settings. Every millimeter counted. There was no room for 'close enough'; it had to be perfect."
The Process: From Pixels to 1:1 Scale "My process for these public works is meticulous. I take the digital designs Amanda sends and print them, then manually translate them into a 1:1 scale drawing on a large wooden board in my workshop. This becomes my map. I forge each section individually, constantly checking the contours to ensure I am capturing Amanda’s exact artistic intent. In public art, the blacksmith’s hand must be invisible—my goal is to be the perfect translator of the artist’s mind."
The London Installation "Before the final paint was applied, every piece was photographed and sent to Amanda for approval. In this partnership, communication is as vital as the hammer. These works are now installed and open to the public in London (Godolphin Garden in Hammersmith, London, W12 9HY). If you ever find yourself walking through the city, you might just be standing in front of a piece of history that we brought back to life together."
The stories behind my artwork, the opportunities in The Lighthouse, and the reflections of the Morning Muse are my ways of keeping the lamp lit for our creative community. These resources will always be free to access. If they have found you at the right time, consider fueling the forge to help keep the fire burning. Your support, in any amount, is deeply appreciated.
