Story behind the artwork

Red Apples is the final chapter in a crucial trilogy of works that defined my artistic direction. Having explored landscapes and figurative forms in the first two pieces, I wanted to test this new technique against the classic tradition of the Still Life.

This work represents a marriage between the blacksmith’s fire and the painter’s brush. I hand-forged the apples and the bowl as separate elements, giving them a three-dimensional life before mounting them onto the iron plate.

A Study in Contrast: In this piece, I pushed my experimentation with color further. I set the entire scene against a deep, matte black background to create a dramatic sense of space. For the bowl and the cloth, I used my signature "oil and fire" burning technique to create a rich, organic texture. But for the apples themselves, I chose a vibrant, bold red oil paint.

The contrast between the scorched, industrial iron and the brilliant splash of red was a revelation for me. It was the "final proof" I needed. This trilogy—Seven Sisters, Couple in the Rain, and Red Apples—showed me exactly how to balance blacksmithing with fine art. It turned my workshop into a studio and my metal into a canvas.

A Turning Point: I consider Red Apples to be a cornerstone of my process. It wasn't just about making a beautiful picture; it was about discovering a permanent way to use these procedures in everything I have created since. It was the moment I stopped wondering "if" I could combine these worlds and started knowing "how."

The stories behind my artwork, the opportunities in The Lighthouse, and the reflections of the Morning Muse are my ways of keeping the lamp lit for our creative community. These resources will always be free to access. If they have found you at the right time, consider fueling the forge to help keep the fire burning. Your support, in any amount, is deeply appreciated.
