Story behind the artwork

This work, which I’ve titled Sketch, was born entirely without a plan. It is another piece that originated in a sudden flash of thought—specifically during a Saturday morning drive to work. As I was driving, the concept flickered through my mind: the memory of traditional darkroom photography.

Those who remember working with film will recall the moment after a photo is developed, when the wet papers are hung on a line to dry, and the image slowly begins to reveal itself. I wanted to capture that specific moment of "becoming."

Instead of a traditional horizontal line, I designed a vertical iron stand where two brass plates are held in place by pins, as if they are pinned there to dry and reveal their secrets. To achieve the "developing" effect on the brass, I used fire to burn the metal, creating organic textures and colors that shift depending on how the light hits them.

I decided to give this piece a dual purpose by integrating it with light. While it functions as a sculpture, it is also an interior lamp. The light interacts with the brass to create a warm, atmospheric glow. While the fixture could be adapted for the outdoors, I recommend this piece for interior spaces to preserve the delicate finish and "developing" detail of the brass plates, which could be altered by the elements.

The stories behind my artwork, the opportunities in The Lighthouse, and the reflections of the Morning Muse are my ways of keeping the lamp lit for our creative community. These resources will always be free to access. If they have found you at the right time, consider fueling the forge to help keep the fire burning. Your support, in any amount, is deeply appreciated.
