Story behind the artwork
This is one of the most enigmatic pieces I have ever created. It began, like many of my works, in a state of total surrender. I followed my instincts without a plan, working with copper sheet and treating it with oil and fire to achieve a deep, burning glow.
When I finished, I stepped back and asked myself: What is this telling me? My first thought was a nostalgic one. I grew up on a housing estate, and the image reminded me of a sunset framed between the tall concrete blocks—the sky turning blood-orange while the streets below were already swallowed by the dark, lit only by the pale hum of streetlamps.
I completed the work in October and hung it on a wall behind a door in my home, where it stayed, mostly out of sight, for several months.
The Realization: In June of the following year, the world watched in horror as the Grenfell Tower fire unfolded in London. It was an unimaginable tragedy, a towering inferno that claimed so many lives. Like everyone else, I was deeply shaken.
A few days after the fire, I walked into the room where this piece hung. As I turned to close the door, the sculpture was directly in front of me. In that moment, I didn't see a childhood sunset anymore. I saw a burning building. The copper glow, the vertical structure, the dark voids—it was an exact, haunting reflection of the tragedy that had just occurred.
I’ll admit, it terrified me. I don't claim to be a psychic or a fortune teller, but seeing that image—created months before the fire—made me stop creating for a while. I was afraid of what might come out of my hands if I truly "let go" and followed my instincts. It took time before I felt comfortable returning to this intuitive style of work.
A Note on the Piece: Interestingly, this sculpture has aged differently than all my other works. While my other pieces remain in excellent condition, this one began to rust heavily around the copper, almost as if it were being consumed by its own history. Because of this, the original is not for sale. However, if this story resonates with you, I am open to recreating this concept upon request, ensuring the new version is preserved for a lifetime.
The stories behind my artwork, the opportunities in The Lighthouse, and the reflections of the Morning Muse are my ways of keeping the lamp lit for our creative community. These resources will always be free to access. If they have found you at the right time, consider fueling the forge to help keep the fire burning. Your support, in any amount, is deeply appreciated.
