### The Reality of UK Submission Fees

Most UK open calls operate on an extraction model: artists pay £25 to £40 upfront simply to have their work reviewed by a judging panel for ten seconds, with no feedback and no guarantee of wall space.

The Fronteer Open 2026 in Sheffield takes an artist-first, lower-risk approach. It is 100% free to enter. Artists only pay a flat £45 participation fee if their piece is physically selected for the exhibition.

### Eligible Media & Dimensions

Artists across the UK may submit one piece of work in any medium (excluding audio/video works):

1. Wall-Mounted Work (Mixed Media, Painting, Relief, Drawing, Print):

Must not exceed *70 x 70 cm** (including frame or outer mount).

* Must arrive ready to hang with secure attachments in place.

2. Freestanding 3D / Sculptural Work:

Must fit within a *30 x 30 cm plinth footprint**.

Maximum height cannot exceed *50 cm**.

### The Steel Canvas Curatorial Note

The Fronteer Open is hung in a traditional salon style. This structural detail matters significantly for your chances of selection:

* Scale Bias: While the maximum dimension is 70 cm, galleries hanging dense salon walls have limited physical capacity for large works. Submissions between 30 cm and 55 cm with strong surface relief or tactile presence have a significantly higher statistical selection rate than pieces maxing out the 70 cm limit.

* The 100-Word Statement: You are permitted a description of up to 100 words that will sit alongside the physical work. Avoid dense academic theory. Clearly state the raw materials used, the physical fabrication process, and the core conceptual idea.

* Photography: You can upload up to 3 images (1 full shot and 2 detail shots). Because judges review digital submissions on screen, ensure your primary photograph has square cropping, accurate white balance, and zero glare on unvarnished or glossy areas.
