8 Billion Worlds

I remember being told as a child, "Why can't you be more like him?" Whether it was classmates or friends from the street, the world seemed obsessed with comparison. But even then, I felt a quiet resistance. I didn't want to be like anyone else.

The truth is, Being Yourself is a difficult craft. It is a recognition that can take days, years, or even a lifetime to master. But it is the most important work you will ever do.

I see this now in my eight-year-old daughter. She tells me she feels "different"—that she feels like nobody else is like her. It scares her a little, as it scares many of us. But I tell her the same thing I tell myself at the anvil: That is exactly how it is supposed to be.

There are not two people on this planet who think the same, see the same, or forge the same path. As a teenager, I never had an "Idol." I tried to find someone perfect enough to mimic, but I never could. I realized then that discovering your own identity is the most powerful tool you own.

In creativity, your uniqueness is your only real currency. If you try to see the world through someone else’s eyes, you can only ever produce a copy. But when you accept your own perspective, you bring something into existence that the world has never seen before. You show us how unique we are.

Many people spend their lives in the shadow of depression because they are exhausted from trying to be someone else. They are ashamed of their own "different" edges. But those edges are where the beauty is.

Accepting yourself as a unique part of this world isn't a risk—it's a liberation. We aren't just 8 billion people sharing a planet; we are 8 billion individual worlds co-existing.

Don't be ashamed of your exceptionality. The world is waiting for it.
