Story behind the artwork
This work was born from a challenge to explore the theme of "Angels" for an exhibition. I wanted to avoid the obvious, literal depictions of winged beings. Instead, I began to think about our human relationship with the divine and the spiritual—how we call upon help only when we are desperate.
The sculpture features a pair of angelic wings set aside on a stand, abandoned. It represents a specific human pattern: when people are at their lowest—when they are "down"—they are often humble, perceptive, and deeply spiritual. They reach out for an angel to help them carry their burdens. But once their lives improve and they find success again, they often cast that help aside. They move forward as if they never needed the "wings" to begin with. The angel becomes unnecessary, a forgotten relic of a harder time.
The creation of this piece was a race against time. At the period, I was working long hours on commercial blacksmithing commissions for my clients. Because my artistic work has to live in the gaps of my professional schedule, I found myself finishing the sculpture on the very day of the exhibition deadline. I rushed home, only to realize the submission window had closed at 5:00 PM. I had missed the deadline by mere hours.
Though it never made it to that specific exhibition, the sculpture found a much more meaningful home. I donated The Unneeded Angel to St. Peter’s Church in Barton, where it remains on display—a quiet reminder of humility and the "wings" that carry us when we cannot walk ourselves.
The stories behind my artwork, the opportunities in The Lighthouse, and the reflections of the Morning Muse are my ways of keeping the lamp lit for our creative community. These resources will always be free to access. If they have found you at the right time, consider fueling the forge to help keep the fire burning. Your support, in any amount, is deeply appreciated.
