Story behind the artwork

The Quest for the Living Flower "Every project teaches me something new, often when I least expect it. A client approached me with a request for a garden gate—an arched frame filled with the elegance of tulips. It sounded simple until I stepped out of my forge to find a reference. I wanted to see a real tulip, to feel the curve of its petals and the strength of its stem. I went to the local florist, only to be told: 'We have no tulips. They bloom in the spring, and it is already late summer.'"

Forging from Memory and Pixels "Nature has its own calendar, and I was out of sync with it. Since I couldn't hold a living flower in my hand, I turned to the digital world. I spent time studying images of tulips—how they lean, how their heavy heads bow, and how their leaves wrap around the stem. My task was to take those spring memories and translate them into the language of iron during the heat of August."

The Beauty of Decay "The most interesting choice, however, was the finish. Instead of painting or galvanizing the steel to keep it 'perfect,' the client decided to leave the iron raw. She wanted it to rust. In the world of blacksmithing, we often fight oxidation, but here, we embraced it. The gate was designed to transform—to turn from the grey of the forge to the deep, earthy oranges and browns of natural rust."

A Living Sculpture "Today, the Tulips Gate doesn't just sit in the garden; it breathes with it. As the seasons pass, the iron flowers 'bloom' in their own way, their color deepening with the rain and the sun. It’s a permanent spring captured in a material that, like the garden itself, only gets more beautiful with age."
