Story behind the artwork

The Shared Language

There is a rare kind of magic that happens when a client becomes a co-creator. For fifteen years, I have worked with one particular woman who has a gift for seeing what her garden is missing. She doesn’t come to me with a blueprint; she comes with a feeling. She provides the spark of the idea, but she relies on my hands to give it a body.

The Challenge: Catching the Wind

Her latest vision was her most ethereal yet: she wanted to capture the Wind.

How do you take something invisible, weightless, and fleeting, and forge it out of heavy, unyielding iron? It is a fascinating puzzle for a blacksmith—to make the hardest material on earth look as though it is being tossed by a summer breeze.

The "Ghost" in the Garden

While she had the heart of the idea, she struggled to see how it would truly sit in the physical world. She wasn't confident in how her vision would translate to the soil and the trees.

I could see it in my mind perfectly—the curves, the lean, the movement—but I knew she needed to feel it too. To bridge the gap between her imagination and my anvil, I didn't start with heat. I started with wood.

I created a "template"—a life-sized skeleton made of thin wooden boards. I stood them up in the garden, letting them curve exactly where the steel would eventually live. I photographed these "wooden ghosts" to show her the scale and the weight of the piece before a single spark flew.

From Doubt to Iron

The moment she saw the wooden template, her doubt vanished. The "ghost" in the garden proved that her vision was right all along. With her confidence finally matching my own, the real work began. I took that wooden map back to the forge and translated those light, temporary curves into the eternal strength of iron.

The Fulfillment

For me, the greatest joy isn't just finishing the piece; it’s the process of helping someone find the courage to see their own thoughts take shape. For fifteen years, we have been filling her garden with metal works, one shared idea at a time. This "Wind" installation is more than just a sculpture—it’s a partnership built on a shared language of trust, steel, and soul.

The stories behind my artwork, the opportunities in The Lighthouse, and the reflections of the Morning Muse are my ways of keeping the lamp lit for our creative community. These resources will always be free to access. If they have found you at the right time, consider fueling the forge to help keep the fire burning. Your support, in any amount, is deeply appreciated.
